One of Europe's best-known theatre institutions - Burgtheater Vienna - will perform Thomas Bernhard's Am Ziel (Destination) in Timisoara on 22 September 2023, as part of the European Theatre Festival Eurothalia. The performance is considered one of the highlights of this year's Eurothalia, which will run from 20 to 30 September under the motto "Perspectives", and of the European Capital of Culture year, Timisoara 2023. The event will take place in the Great Hall of the National Theatre "Mihai Eminescu" Timișoara and the Romanian National Opera in Timișoara, and will start at 20.30.

First performed in 1981, the play "Am Ziel" (Destination) is considered a furious and witty reckoning about the state of the world and the theatre. The widow of a factory owner decides to leave her city mansion with her daughter and go to her summer residence by the sea. They are joined by a young playwright whose play the two women had attended the night before. Matthias Rippert directs the show and the cast includes: Dörte Lyssewski, Maresi Riegner and Rainer Galke. Fabian Liszt is in charge of the set design.

The Burgtheater is the second oldest European theatre after the Comédie-Française and the largest German-speaking theatre. The auditorium of the old Burgtheater, which was built in the mid-18th century, had a capacity of 1200 people. It was also used for musical performances. Works by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others, were performed here. An original small-scale copy of the theatre, built in 1817, can be found in Oravitza, in Banat.

The new Burgtheater was built at the end of the 19th century in another location in Vienna. In the decades after World War II, their repertoire was internationalised, and Peter Hall, Luca Ronconi and Giorgio Strehler, among others, staged here as guest directors. German theatre artist Claus Peymann, who was director from 1986 to 1999, modernised the repertoire and initiated sometimes heated political debates. The performance of Thomas Bernhard's "Heldenplatz", a play about Austria's National Socialist past, provoked a heated debate in Austrian society. Since 2019, the theatre has been run by Martin Kušej.
