The action takes place a few months before the end of World War II in a German concentration camp in occupied Poland: The camp commandant wants to exemplify his ideas about a society without ethical concepts in which the feeling of guilt becomes a hindrance overtaken by history and therefore useless. To this end he uses Sophocles' play 'Oedipus the King'. On his orders, the tragedy written by the classical author will not only be acted out but even "lived" by the camp inmates. Commandant Kurt, representative of a criminal, inhuman and cynical regime, takes on the role of the ancient gods. A Jewish prisoner, the commander's childhood friend, is condemned to kill his father and impregnate his own mother.
