Winter ends at the German State Theatre with three performances for all ages

16 February 2024

At the end of February, the German State Theatre invites you to three performances for all ages - about love, about self-discovery, about the power of women - just right to celebrate the spring that is about to begin.

On 24 February 2024, starting at 7.30 pm, we invite you to see Leonce and Lena by Georg Büchner, directed by Niky Wolcz. The text by Büchner, one of the most highly regarded playwrights in the German-speaking world, tells the story of two lovers, strangers in an irrational world, whom only irony and self-irony can console. The characters are melancholic, wandering in a meaningless universe, with diffuse identities, irreparably affected by the grotesqueries that society and the political class project onto them.

Then on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., we scheduled TSCHICK. Why We Took the Car - the story of Maik and Tschick, two teenagers who believe there must be a world other than the one they know at home and at school. Maik comes from a German middle-class background, and for his parents the roads have long since parted, even though they still live under the same roof. Maik considers himself an outsider, as does Tschick, whose family moved from Russia to Germany. At first, the only thing the two have in common is a sense of being strangers in a society that makes it difficult for them. With a stolen car, they decide to flee Berlin and embark on a journey that will become an odyssey. At the end of it is the exploration of reality and self-exploration.

We end February with an adaptation of a famous text by the Greek playwright Aristophanes - Lysistrata 3.0, directed by Niky Wolcz. We look forward to seeing you on 28 February 2024 at 7.30pm for a comedy written more than two millennia ago, which puts its finger on the eternal wounds of society, even today: greed, corruption and war. The author's solution is to cede power to women, who will find a way to restore peace to the world. The play, a satire, thus denounces the moral contradictions of our society, the lack of equality between people, the imbalance of social roles, war as a trivial preoccupation and finds utopian solutions. Salvation - the author and director tell us - can only come from us and through us.
