Part of the “First Row” program for promoting young creators, the German State Theater Timisoara (GSTT) will be setting to stage the performance “And baby makes seven” by Paula Vogel, under the direction of Iris Spiridon.

Opening night is

Wednesday, the 21st of December 2016, at 19,30

in the Studio Hall of the Hungarian State Theatre “Csiky Gergely” Timișoara.

Translation of the text to German is done by Valerie Seufert. Director of the play is Iris Spiridon and scenography is by Ioana Popescu. The cast features GSTT actors Olga Török, Silvia Török and Horia Săvescu.

Paula Vogel is an American playwright and university professor. She received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play “How I Learned to Drive”. Vogel was also Chair of the playwriting department at the Yale School of Drama.

Iris Spiridon is a young theatre director and screenwriter. She graduated the theatre directing section at the University of Theatrical Art and Cinema from Bucharest in 2008, her master’s program in 2010 and her doctorate in 2013, class of Univ. Prof. Dr. Alexa Visarion. She has directed shows at the National Theatre in Bucharest, Godot Theatre-Café as well as the Apollo 111 Theatre.

The text by American playwright Paula Vogel is ingenious, sarcastic, provocative and sensible, the message behind it a simple one: “Don’t be afraid to play!” The play’s central concept is daring and disruptive. Meant to ridicule homophobia, it represents a pansexual triad that’s very different from the gay families we see the TV shows nowadays. While awaiting a real child, the characters are confronted with the drama of having to suppress their own inner child, each others alter-ego.

About this show, Iris Spiridon declares: “I chose this text firstly because it told of what happened within the imagination, an intimate and offering aspect. The center subject has to do with the idea of an imaginary family that we all try to build at one point. And what ties the characters together is what I look for as well, a type of love with many openings towards original.
