The new year begins at the German Theatre with four performances on four consecutive days for all audiences

8 January 2024

The German State Theatre Timisoara starts the new year with four performances in four consecutive days, for all age groups, to which everyone is invited.

So on Wednesday, 10 January 2024, we'll see you at Humans. For Sale, written and directed by Carmen Lidia Vidu, a show about the immoral procedures and actions of the communist authorities who tried to profit financially from Romania's ethnic diversity, negotiating the price of every German and Jew in the country as a commodity.

While official propaganda warns of the "abysses" of the free world, the biggest human trafficking of the 20th century was probably taking place in Romania. Humans. For Sale exposes the trade in ethnic Germans from communist Romania, who between 1969 and 1989 were sold to the Federal Republic of Germany. It is a show about the disappearance of a community, the efforts its members make to leave the hostile environment in which they live and the demonization of their desire to dare to dream of their future in a freer and more citizen-friendly state.

Then, on Thursday 11 January 2024, we venture to Ancient Greece for Lysistrata 3.0, after Aristophanes, directed by Niky Wolcz, with the women of Sparta, Athens and Thebes, who will try to stop the war started by men. Their plan includes, among other things, a utopian reconciliation - make love, not war - a slogan encountered many times throughout history.

Do we really know the authors of classical antiquity? The honest answer to that question would be no. Nor, therefore, do we know that these authors, among other things, were speaking out on issues of their time, some of the questions reaching to the present day and even being of burning topicality in view of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On Friday, January 12, 2024, we meet at The Theatre, written and directed by Pascal Rambert, to discover what behind-the-scenes relationships form between the actors of the GSTT ensemble in rehearsals, during performances, and in their personal lives.

The play was written in just a few months, while Pascal Rambert was simultaneously editing shows on several continents. As the author points out, the text is fiction, even though the GSTT actors and actresses provided the material: memories, experiences, dreams. For the most part, these are related to the acting profession, as the stage is at the centre of their lives. Simply put: Theatre, like other artistic activities, cannot be a passing passion or just a hobby.

All three performances start at 19:30.

This weekend we're welcoming the little ones to the Snow Queen, a fantastic adventure with Gerda and Kai, two brave children lost in the universe of the eternal ice where the fearsome ice queen reigns. The show is written by Yevgeny Schwarz and directed by László Béres. The journey begins on Saturday 13 January 2023 at 18.00.

The play, written in the interwar period, uses motifs from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. While the story didn't have much of an echo in the mid-19th century, its adaptation for the theatre, which came almost a century later, was incomparably more successful. This is probably because the play not only makes very clear the contradiction between emotion and reason, or rich and poor, but also denounces the political conditions of the Stalinist period, albeit in a veiled way. While many films have been made in recent decades, including the Disney film, which freely adapted and treated Andersen's story, the Russian author's play offers several layers of interpretation and is aimed at both children and adults.
