German State Theatre Timișoara

First performance of the 2023/2024 season at the German Theatre - THE THEATRE, written and directed by Pascal Rambert

5 September 2023

The German State Theatre Timisoara announces a new premiere, in co-production with Structure Production and the French Institute of Romania in Timisoara, the first of the 2023/2024 season - THE THEATRE, written and directed by renowned French director Pascal Rambert. The event will take place on Thursday 14 September 2023, starting at 7.30pm.

The text was written in just a few months, while Pascal Rambert was simultaneously editing performances on several continents. As the author points out, it is fiction, even though the actors and actresses of TGST provided the material: memories, experiences, dreams. For the most part, these were related to the acting profession, because the stage is at the heart of life. Simply put: theatre, like other artistic activities, cannot be a secondary occupation. Looking at it from this perspective, they all share the experience that there are no boundaries between life on stage and the supposedly private life. At the same time, however, this unites them and makes theatre, in a sense, a family affair. All the more so when, as in the case of TGST, the middle and younger generation has passed through the hands of the older ones. Looking back at the 70 years of TGST's existence, one realizes that the history of this East German stage in Central Europe, which essentially dates back to the 18th century and has been very eventful, is fragile and needs to be protected. Pascal Rambert succeeds in showing TGST as a dream ship on which everyone has remained faithful to the same ideas.

French director, playwright and choreographer Pascal Rambert ran the T2G theatre in Gennevilliers, near Paris, from 2007 to 2016, transforming it into a national centre for contemporary performing arts. Among other things, he is an associate artist of the National Theatre in Strasbourg and the Piccolo Theatre in Milan. Rambert's plays have been translated into numerous languages, his most successful to date being Clôture de l'amour (The End of a Love), which was also presented at the TGST Eurothalia festival in 2022. The play has been performed at the Avignon Theatre Festival, in New York, Rome, Hamburg and Beijing, among others. As a director and writer, Rambert works all over the world. In addition to numerous other awards he has received, the French Academy awarded him the Theatre Prize in 2016 for his entire body of work.

About the performance THE THEATRE, Pascal Rambert said the following:

"Sometimes things come close to a miracle. When Tilla Rudel, the director of the French Institute, invited me to Timisoara, I came with no preconceived ideas and discovered the city. And the people: the actors of the German State Theatre Timișoara, whom I liked immediately. I met the actors and actresses one by one. I listened to them. Afterwards they told me about themselves, about their lives, by e-mail. That's what I always do with all the plays I write for actors around the world: I meet them. I talk to them. Then I write for them. Here I chose to write for the 26 members of the German State Theatre. Because all of them have described in their stories a real and fascinating Romania. What we see on stage is not, of course, their private lives. We have mixed lives, stories and paths. The play Theatre is about the love of theatre. About how someone dedicates their life to it. How one is happy and unhappy there. The setting of The Theatre is a birthday party following a rehearsal. It is life itself that suddenly appears on stage, with all its joys and sorrows, its hopes and its disclaimers. Youth and old age. Love and loneliness."

The performance will also be part of the 9th edition of the European Theatre Festival "Eurothalia", which will take place from 20 to 30 September 2023.

Tickets for both performances are available at the German Theatre's ticket office and online on the Entertix platform.
