The main projects of the German State Theatre Timisoara in the year of the European Capital of Culture 2023

In 2023, the year of the European Capital of Culture in Timisoara, the German State Theatre Timisoara (TGST) proposes numerous premieres and cultural events with national and international artists.
After the country premiere of the drama Tschick. Why I stole the car by Wolfgang Herrndorf, directed by Irisz Kovacs, which took place in January, and the presentation - on 17 February - of 1989. Figures by Ilinca Stihi, a co-production with the National Radio Theatre and broadcast live on the national Radio Romania Cultural station, we invite the audience to two new premieres by German directors: on 4 March Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Kristóf Szabó, and on 23 April Aristophanes' Lysistrata, directed by Niky Wolcz.

As every spring, the TGST will organise again this year, in collaboration with the Nikolaus Lenau High School, the NiL Theatre Weekend (25-26 March) and the International Festival of German-Speaking School and Youth Theatre (24-27 April). During the summer, the TGST team will be working on two new productions: the Dragon by Evgeny Schwartz, directed by Yuri Kordonsky, which will premiere at the end of July 2023, closing the 2022/2023 season, and The Theatre, a production in collaboration with the French Institute, which will bring the international director Pascal Rambert to Timisoara. The premiere of this show will see the limelight on 14 September.

Also during the summer, the project Danube women stories, in collaboration with the Cultural Reference for the Danube Area of the Central Museum of the Danube Danube-Swabians of the UIm, will present portraits of women who have influenced the Danube region and brought about changes in the whole Central European area in the public space and in the TGST foyer.

From 20-30 September 2023, the 9th edition of the European Theatre Festival Eurothalia will take place, featuring a selection of performances produced by leading theatres in Europe, on themes relevant to Europe in our time.

Last but not least, during September-October 2023, the TGST collective will work on a documentary theatre performance, based on a script to be written by the German author Thomas Perle, with the assistance of the director Clemens Bechtel, about the 1938 bombing of the theatre building in Timișoara during the tour of the actress Sidy Thal. The show will be the first co-production between the German State Theatre Timișoara and the Jewish State Theatre Bucharest and will be performed in the repertoires of both institutions from autumn 2023.
