5 December 2023

On Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Media Hall of the TNB, the Foundation "Spirit Românesc Pro – Arte şi Caritate" Bucharest, in partnership with the National Theatre "I. L. Caragiale" Bucharest, awarded the "Rinocerul" Magazine Awards 2023.

The jury was composed of theatre writers and critics Dinu Grigorescu (member of the Writers' Union and president of the Foundation), Alexandra Ares (member of UNITER, Writers' Union/Executive Board of the Drama Section and PEN New York, vice-president of the Foundation) and Vlad Lungu (critic, editor-in-chief of the magazine).

Award-winning shows include Sidy Thal - Best THEATRE-DOCUMENT award and 1989. Numbers - Best RADIO PERFORMANCE award.

Sidy Thal is the first collaboration of the German State Theatre Timisoara with the Jewish State Theatre Bucharest. The performance written by Thomas Perle & Clemens Bechtel and directed by Clemens Bechtel re-enacts the events of the 1938 bombing, when two hand grenades exploded in the auditorium during a performance by the Jewish-Bucovinian singer Sidy Thal and her ensemble at the Timișoara Theatre. An anti-Semitic attack by the Iron Guard, a far-right nationalist group, in which four people were killed and seventy injured.

1989. Numbers is a co-production of the National Radiophonic Theatre, the German State Theatre Timișoara and Radio Romania Cultural. The text is written by Ilinca Stihi and directed by Ilinca Stihi & Attila Vizauer. 1989. Numbers values the contribution of Timisoara's cultural resistance to the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The main narrative thread of the show tells the story of a group of young rockers who, through a combination of circumstances, will incite a reaction against the actions of the security forces against the supporters of Pastor Tőkés. They provide the context to restore the spirit of freedom that the city defended and inspired through the rock movement of the pre-revolutionary decade. The performance, which revisits the form of early radio theatre performances with an audience in a contemporary version, was performed at the official opening of the European Capital of Culture in Timisoara.
