The German State Theatre Timisoara has started rehearsals for "A Midsummer Night's Dream", William Shakespeare's comedy

20 January 2023

The ensemble of the German State Theatre Timisoara has started rehearsals for A Midsummer Night's Dream, William Shakespeare's most popular comedy, which will premiere on 4 March 2023.

The director invited to stage the production is Cologne-based artist Kristóf Szabo. Szabo began his career as a visual artist before founding the F.A.C.E Mixed Media ensemble in the city on the Rhine. His productions use dance and choreography with light installations and video art, among others. Szabo is known to theatre audiences in Timisoara through his productions at the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre Festival.

Despite the fairy-tale plot and the merry confusion in which the play's characters get entangled, Shakespeare also reveals the dark sides of love: jealousy and possessiveness, the struggle for power and the fight between the sexes. In the early 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed the overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, and in the 20th century Benjamin Britten wrote the opera of the same name. There are film adaptations of the drama, including the classic created by Max Reinhardt and William Dieterle in Hollywood in 1935, and John Neumeier's ballet, now playing in Hamburg and in the repertoire of many major European cultural institutions.

The TGST production will feature all members of the ensemble in the cast. The video art and music are designed by Ivo Kovacs and József Iszlai, and the set and costumes are by the two young guest artists Ioana Groza and Ștefana Chelaru.

We look forward to seeing you at the theatre!
