Thomas Perle honoured at the Austrian Nestroy Theatre Awards

3 October 2023

Author Thomas Perle, who is currently writing the text for the commissioned work Sidy Thal at the German State Theatre Timișoara (DSTT) together with Clemens Bechtel, will receive the famous Austrian theatre prize, the Nestroy Prize for the best play, this year for his work karpatenflecken (the carpathians as stains on my skin), which was staged at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The play the carpathians as stains on my skin, which highlights the destiny of the German community in Romania through a family story from the region of Maramureș, was performed at the DSTT in 2022 - at that time in a production of the Deutsches Theater Berlin - for the opening of the European Theatre Festival Eurothalia.

The Griessner Stadl venue in Styria also received a Nestroy Prize nomination for another of Perle's works, namely the commissioned work "Protestants - expulsion from the homeland", in which the author addresses the persecution of Protestants.

The author, who was born in 1987 in Vișeul de Sus and emigrated to Germany in 1991, was appointed as city writer of Timișoara from May to September 2023 on behalf of the German Cultural Forum Eastern Europe.

The documentary theatre play Sidy Thal, which is being rehearsed at the DSTT these weeks, is about the anti-Semitic attack that took place on 26 November 1938 in the Theatre of Timișoara during a guest performance of the Bukovina actress Sidy Thal. The production is being created as a multilingual co-production between the German State Theatre Timișoara and the Jewish State Theatre Bucharest. A preview of it in the form of a staged reading took place on 21 September 2023 in the Inner City Synagogue, conducted by Thomas Perle.

Since 2000, the Nestroy Prize has been awarded to outstanding performances on the Viennese and other Austrian stages.
